Privacy Policy
My policy on collecting information from website users

This policy explains what happens to your information when you use this website (the “Site”). It describes the Site as it is today, and I will update it if the capacity changes.
I run this Site from New Zealand. It is subject to the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, and to the UK and EU GDPR where visitors are covered by them.
I set no cookies, use no analytics, and run no advertising or tracking scripts on this Site. I only collect information when you deliberately send it by subscribing to the newsletter, or by using the contact form.
What I collect
This Site allows me to collect your contact information when you submit it through the Newsletter Subscription form or the Contact Me form. I collect no information when you read the Site.
Newsletter Subscription. Clicking Subscribe opens a pop-up containing a sign-up form provided by Substack, which holds the subscriber list. I use it to send newsletter content about my books and essays. Substack is based in the United States, so subscribing transfers your address there, and Substack’s privacy policy governs what happens to it. Every email you receive will include an unsubscribe link.
Contact Me form. Your name, email address, subject and message are sent to a CloudCannon Inbox. Your submissions are read by me, or an assistant who helps with correspondence, so that I can reply to your message.
What is not collected
- No cookies are set by this Site.
- No analytics. Page views, visitor counts, referrers and approximate location are not recorded.
- No advertising, remarketing or social tracking pixels.
- No fingerprinting or session recording.
Who I share your information with
If you subscribe to my newsletter, I share your email address with Substack, as this is the platform I use to deliver my newsletter. If you use my Contact form, your submission is stored in my CloudCannon CMS and replied to via Gmail. Those are the only outside services involved.
Within my business, Contact form messages may be read by myself or my assistant, who helps monitor my correspondence. No one else sees them.
Your contact information is never shared, sold or rented for any purpose other than the one you gave it for.
How long it is kept
Newsletter: your address stays on the list until you unsubscribe, which you can do from any email.
Contact messages: kept indefinitely, unless you ask for them to be deleted.
Links to other sites
The Site links out to social profiles and to the newsletter on Substack. Once you follow a link, that service’s own privacy policy applies. This policy covers only this Site.
Your rights
You have the right to ask for a copy of any personal information I hold about you, to ask for it to be corrected if you think it is wrong, and to ask for it to be deleted — at any time. These rights come from the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. If the UK or EU GDPR applies to you, you also have the right to object to processing and to restrict it.

If you are not satisfied with the response, you can complain to the New Zealand Office of the Privacy Commissioner, or to your local supervisory authority if you are in the UK or EU.
Changes
This policy is updated whenever the Site changes in a way that affects it. The date at the top shows when that last happened.
